Mice Who Fail to Remember the Past Will Be Trapped By It

“You’ve never written poems for Memorial Day,”
My assistant-poet recently reported to me;
And after checking, I agreed with her – I’ve not.

“You’d write for Flag Day, May Day, Ground Hog—even Oriole Day;
And Memorial Day’s bigger than any of THEM,” she snorted to me.
Seems ironic it’s “Memorial” Day I’ve forgot –

Forgot to honor those who’ve gone before,
Especially those who served and died in war,
Securing and preserving precious freedoms
Like, of speech, and of the press – for Mice who need ’ems.
